This is a great dog park.
It is NOT a doggy day care!

We have heard reports of people who think it is OK to bring their dogs to the park, then leave to run errands. This is absolutely NOT acceptable. If you witness someone leaving their dog in the park, please get as many details as possible and contact JAWITP by clicking on the e-mail link at the bottom of each website page.

And, it is not a Children's Park

Please keep in mind that this is a dog park, not a children's park. It's not that children are not allowed, the point is that the top priority here is the dogs.

Adults who bring children into the dog park must keep the children under close, direct supervision. The park is full of dogs whom you do not know and whose background and issues we may not know. Some dogs are afraid of children. Too many children have not been taught how to behave around strange dogs.

In addition, unsupervised children have caused damage to our park. Children have broken many young saplings (leaving sharp  branches and stumps behind which pose a danger to our dogs). Because of children climbing on the fence and gates, we have had to call the County to come make repairs. Children playing unsupervised in the drainage ditch have built forts out of branches and left them behind, which not only clogs drainage but also poses a danger to our dogs. And it has been reported that an unsupervised child was the culprit who left the faucet on at the Rinsing Station, causing us to lose 50 gallons of water in one day.

IF YOU BRING CHILDREN INTO THE DOG PARK,
YOU MUST KEEP THEM UNDER YOUR DIRECT SUPERVISION.

JAWITP sincerely thanks the excellent personnel
of the DeKalb County Parks Maintenance Dept.
for their consistent support and quick response
to any issues we present to them.

Rest in Peace, Lynn

Lynn Featherly was a constant visitor to the dog park. She was a petite woman with blond hair, although she often wore hats if she was going through chemotherapy treatments. Lynn was recognizable with her two dogs: Sydney, a brown/white Husky who is a long-time therapy dog with Happy Tails; and Romeo, a large, handsome German Shepherd who lives to fetch tennis balls.

Lynn spent years and years fighting various cancers. The woman never, ever gave up or considered defeat. In spite of her valiant efforts and fierce optimism, Lynn passed away on March 23rd. The dogs still visit the park with Lynn's friend, Rick, but Lynn will be missed by many of us. Her spirit was strong and will always provide a bit of Lynn at the park.

Not All Stuffed Toys are Appropriate -- or Safe -- for Dogs

A friend of the JAWITP CFO/Secretary recently posted this sad and scary story on her Facebook page. It is worth reading because many people purchase stuffed toys for their dogs to play with, but not all stuffed toys are safe for dogs. Read this story:

"Last night at agility class, a fellow classmate, who is a veterinarian, told us about a case she had this week. A dog had eaten a child's teddy bear and was very sick. When she opened the dog up to remove what she thought was an intestinal obstruction, she found a huge, gelatin-type mess inside, and the dog's intestines were black and the tissue dead. Surgery was pointless, and the dog died; there was no living intestine left from stomach to colon.

There was no obstruction, so the vet called the manufacturer of the teddy bear on a quest to find out what the gel was and what killed the dog. Turns out that the stuffing for children's toys contains ingredients for flame retardant and mite control! It is highly toxic. Now, you would expect a child's toy to be safe because it is designed for children, but then, they don't expect a child to eat the stuffing of the toys. But we all know that dogs will demolish stuffed toys."

Do not give your dog any children's stuffed toys.

Only allow your dog to play with toys
that are specifically made for dogs!
