A Word of Caution

In recent weeks, a number of early morning visitors have reported that gates are found wide open. There are two sets of gates that are not visible upon entering the park, and dogs have escaped through open gates into the woods. Not all dogs are eager to return.

For the safety of the dogs, the gates beyond Stan's Spot have been chained and locked. Those who wish to take their dogs into the woods must use the gates at the central gathering area. We apologize for the inconvenience, but the safety of the dogs is the top priority in this park.

Please be aware of this danger to your dogs. It's a good idea, if you arrive early in the morning, to check all gates before your dogs discover the chance to run off.

We presume the gates are left open by kids who enter the dog park during the night,
but we can't be certain.

IMPORTANT INFO for Park Visitors

  • Humans MUST pick up after their dogs. This is a DeKalb Co. and State of Georgia law.

  • ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD is allowed inside the dog park fence. Not dog treats, not human food, not any kind of food for any reason. Do not bring anything edible in your pockets or in a bag. DeKalb Co. law says food is NOT allowed inside the fence. Period.

  • Please watch your dog to make sure he/she doesn't put paws in the water bucket, or dogs can get sick from drinking dirty water.

  • Children (under the age of 18) are NOT allowed to touch the faucets of the water barrels or the Rinsing Station. The water stations, including the water barrels inside, and the Rinsing Station are not toys; JAWITP has spent a lot of (donated) money and time to install these stations for the well-being of the dogs in the park. Children should not be allowed to touch these stations, and adults should use caution to prevent wasting valuable water.

    • Please do not over-fill the water buckets. Only a couple of inches of water is advisable. Dogs put their feet in the buckets, so they must be dumped and refilled to ensure clean drinking water. Water is precious in this park, so please help avoid wasting it.

  • Adults who bring children into the park MUST keep the children under their direct supervision. Not all dogs are used to children, and all humans who enter the dog park do so at their own risk. Unsupervised children have caused damage to the park, some of which puts dogs and humans at risk of injury.

  • It's Spring. That means it's SNAKE SEASON. Please be alert, keep a close eye on your dog, and keep children close to you!

Dogs have been bitten in the past, and although none have died, the treatment is expensive and time-critical. And, in spite of what you'd expect, snakes have been seen inside the dog park while there are plenty of people and dogs in the area. Remember that our park is in the woods, and there is a creek just outside the park. Poisonous snakes are known to inhabit the vicinity. BE ALERT. BE CAREFUL.

Your opinions and suggestions can be helpful

Welcome to the Just a Walk in the Park (JAWITP) website, designed to provide information for visitors to the off-leash dog park located within The Liane Levetan Park at Brook Run in  Dunwoody, Georgia.

JAWITP began as a small group of dog lovers who convinced the county to create this off-leash park. The park was officially opened on January 14, 2006. We are a now group of more than 350 dog lovers who appreciate and, therefore, support and maintain our off-leash park. There are no dues and no meetings. To join the group, simply click on the link shown at the bottom of each page of this website. Joining JAWITP means that you will get a monthly newsletter and other time-sensitive alerts about the park.  Most news about the park is typically handled on the website so we don't flood you with e-mails. You can also follow news abut the dog park on Facebook and on Twitter.

Let us know:

  • Problems with irresponsible dog owners
  • Problems with irresponsible parents of small children
  • Any questions about the park itself, security, or maintenance

Because JAWITP has formally adopted this dog park, we now have access to numerous authorities within the Parks Dept., as well as the local police precinct.

This is our park. Be a part of JAWITP and let's keep our park the excellent resource it is.
