WELCOME

Welcome to the Just a Walk in the Park (JAWITP) website, designed to provide information for visitors to the off-leash dog park located within The Liane Levetan Park at Brook Run in  Dunwoody, Georgia. JAWITP began as a small group of dog lovers who convinced the county to create this off-leash park. The park was officially opened on January 14, 2006. We are a now group of more than 200 volunteers who love dogs and, therefore, support and maintain our off-leash park. There are no dues and no meetings. To join the group, simply click on the address shown at the bottom of each page of this website. Joining JAWITP means that you will get e-mail notices of Clean-Up Days and other time-sensitive alerts about the park.  Most news about the park is typically handled on the website so we don't flood you with e-mails.

PLEASE BRING WATER WITH YOU!

We have community water buckets and large barrels to hold water, but if visitors fail to bring water, dogs will be the ones to suffer. Visitors should bring water (the more, the better) and pour their water into either of the two water stations in the park. JAWITP volunteers make sure the buckets are cleaned and swapped out regularly. (And please dispose of your empty water jugs in the large trash can provided.)

Let us know:

· Problems with irresponsible dog owners
· Problems with irresponsible parents of small children
· Questions about the dog park, park security, maintenance

Because JAWITP has formally adopted this dog park, we now have access to numerous authorities within the Parks Dept., as well as the local police precinct.

This is our park. Be a part of JAWITP and let’s keep our park the excellent resource it is.

Dog of the Month: BENTLEY
After an hour or two of romping and wrestling with all his friends at the dog park, Bentley naps on his porch.
Bentley likes to play Hide-n-Seek while his family works in the yard.
JAWITP DOG of the MONTH:
BENTLEY

The Dog of the Month for July is Bentley.  His family, Terry and Pat C., have made nine rescues over the years: seven dogs, one lop-eared rabbit and a ferret – most of them off the street. When their last dog died, it was so painful they vowed never to have another one.  After a couple of years they decided maybe it was time. They didn’t want to buy from a breeder.  They felt that would help finance a puppy-mill somewhere and sign a death warrant for an innocent dog unfortunate enough to have been picked up by a kill facility. Since no strays had taken up with them lately, they started visiting pounds and rescue facilities.

It took almost two years.  They found several that pleased one of them but did not create a fire with the other. There also was a wonderful Doberman that they were about to leave the rescue site with – till the handler just happened to mention that she got along with adults and children, but was dog-aggressive. It broke their hearts, but they turned her down because they “doggie sit” with several of their kids’ and friends’ dogs.

Then Bentley found them. He literally ran over his sister in the kennel and almost tore down the gate to get to Terry and Pat.  With his personality (affectionate, intelligent, stubborn and powerful) he has been a real challenge, but neither of them regrets the decision one bit.  Terry likes to say the name Bentley was chosen because he was the most bull-headed and stubborn dog either of them had ever encountered.  “Bentley” being Pat’s maiden name, she disagrees and thinks that the name is fitting for such a beautiful and regal dog!  Their second choice for a name was Chance, since he reminded them of Chance in Homeward Bound, The Incredible Journey.  Like Chance in the movie, he was also getting a second chance, because he was in the DeKalb County Dog Pound – a kill-facility.

Bentley’s favorite activity is visiting the Brook Run dog park, where he has developed quite a reputation for his “rough and tumble play”.  At home, Bentley enjoys following Terry and Pat around in the yard, watching the squirrels, birds, and occasional deer.  In the evening, he is usually pooped from a day in the park. He will settle in with Pat and Terry to watch his favorite TV show, The Dog Whisperer.  Bentley just can’t understand that business about walking for exercise.  Though he tolerates Pat’s attempts to provide exercise and discipline through the walk, he clearly prefers and good romp in the mud at Brook Run!

If you have 3-4 photos of your dog, please feel free to send them to JAWITP, and we'll be happy to feature your pet as Dog of the Month. Hopefully we'll receive enough shots to rotate frequently. When you submit photos, please give me a little biography of your dog.
